Sutardja Dai Hall


Sutardja Dai Hall may appear to the uninitiated as an old, familiar building, one among Berkeley's many gabled rooftops. But inside, the facility houses education and research spaces to development new technologies intended to address pressing national and global challenges. Designed to support multi-disciplinary partnerships and collaborations across four UC campuses, the building also houses a nanofabrication lab that includes two 15,000 square-foot cleanrooms equipped with some of the world's most advanced equipment. Steel reinforcement and support slabs 39" thick reduce structural vibrations to less than 125 micro-inches/second.

SmithGroupJJR delivered the cost-effective, efficient facility after the university was presented with an unbuildable, costly plan by another firm. In the end, the redesign enhanced the functionality, organization at a much lower cost.
