SmithGroupJJR designed this project to accommodate 48 principal investigators (PI) and their teams to conduct bench-top research into cardiovascular diseases, and translate findings directly to patient care in the same facility, which includes an 8,000-square-foot outpatient clinic. Previously dispersed over several sites, the PIs now occupy a facility dedicated to their study.
Moreover, lab spaces encourage successful research by promoting collaboration and providing a wholesome working environment. The open lab layout minimizes the use of corridors and maximizes flexibility, while all researchers' offices are co-located around generous, glass-enclosed, informal meeting areas, and tied vertically with an open stair to foster communication throughout the building.
