“The vision for Link Detroit was to connect some of the city’s most important community assets, making them available for all to enjoy. SmithGroupJJR showed how that could be done with the greatest benefit to the city.”

—Tom Woiwode, Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan

Over the past decade, Detroit has completed several significant non-motorized transportation corridors. While substantial in their individual contributions, collectively they lacked a capacity for connectivity that could make them successful from a city-wide network perspective. Then, in 2012, the federal TIGER grant program offered a way for the city to move forward with critically needed transportation connections, and realize a true paradigm shift in non-motorized transportation options. Link Detroit was born.
For four years SmithGroupJJR worked closely in partnership with the City and a group of non-profits to conceptualize, plan, design and implement Link Detroit. The plan recommended $21 million of multi-modal infrastructure improvements, in many cases, extending and completing progress already made in greenways, streetscapes and bicycle paths. Now complete, these improvements link several of Detroit’s finest assets, including the Detroit RiverWalk, Eastern Market, Downtown, Midtown and surrounding neighborhoods. Together, they create a non-motorized, environmentally proactive network that provides more mobility options to residents, and is significantly improving livability, spurring reinvestment, and creating a more vital, energized urban environment.
