Forensic Services and Coroner's Complex

“This will undoubtedly be a world-class facility, contributing to the advancement and evolution of forensic science and medicine.”

—Jeff Arnold, Manager, Forensic Services

Renowned worldwide for leadership and innovation in forensic science and death investigations, the clients desired an updated facility ready for coming advances in examinations and research. They had outgrown their two 35-year old spaces in downtown Toronto, and sought a better platform for state-of-the-art forensics.

Teamed with WZMH, SmithGroupJJR's unique approach to forensic facility planning and design includes a multi-disciplinary team of primarily in-house experts: architects, engineers, laboratory planners, and forensic experts. For a challenge like the new Forensic Services and Coroner's Complex, this integrated approach is ideal.

With a focus on maximum efficiency and the available synergies of forensic components, the design team toured and benchmarked similar facilities throughout North America. Numerous best practices are included in the facility, including, flexible labs and access to daylight for all regularly occupied lab space, Containment Level 3 (CL3) space, and diagnostic imaging tools for death investigations. Even fundamental design procedures, such as equipment right-sizing, helped to streamline the facility's footprint and reduce operational costs – a key service for the public at large.
