With its landmark massing and lively facade, this award-winning, multipurpose cultural venue accommodates a growing arts program for this Maryland institution. It has also created a recognizable, iconic form that bridges Montgomery College's western and eastern quarters and adds focus to a busy, five-point intersection.

The design team at SmithGroupJJR conceived a dramatic roofscape and highly transparent, glass-fronted main facade to create instant identity and intrigue about the doings inside. Art studios, rehearsal spaces, classrooms and an ample glass-walled dance studio are organized around two large amenities: a 500-seat hall for music and dance as well as a 125-seat performance drama studio. A highly flexible design for the larger theater allows the college to host traditional performances as well as modern music, dance and performance.

The art center's image has earned critical acclaim for reflecting its contemporary functions with a two-story, glass-bar facade and also for creating urban scale and immediate identification of a prominent institution. An exhilarating, urbane gesture, the center enriches the ongoing revitalization of Silver Spring, Maryland.
