Patricia Boyle

"In elementary school, I remember being fascinated by how the buildings (in downtown San Francisco) were set into the topography."

Asked about her earliest interests in architecture, Patty recalls a family vacation to California when she was in elementary school. “I remember being fascinated by how the buildings were set into the topography of downtown San Francisco,” she replies. “Coming from Michigan, I had never experienced that perspective before.” Intrigued by solving problems and building things, a career in architecture seemed a natural fit. Now a principal at the Detroit office, Patty has worked on a broad range of noteworthy projects in her 15 years with SmithGroupJJR, including large corporate headquarters, National Historic Register buildings and one of her personal favorites, a cutting-edge science facility at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, commonly called Virginia Tech.  “I enjoyed the technical challenge,” she says, “and the collaboration was unbeatable.” When not problem-solving on projects, Patty enjoys “getting outside, in or on the water,” in a kayak or sailboat with her family.
