Mark Roddy

"Treat people the way you would like to be treated."

If Mark weren't an architect, he says he would be a filmmaker. "I love that films can evoke emotion and thought long after you see them," he remarks. "They can take you to another place, experience, and time. I would like to create that." As one of SmithGroupJJR's design directors and a go-to designer for the Workplace practice, Mark lends his creative talents to a variety of commercial and civic clients, designing spaces that respond to the surrounding community and its culture. He believes architecture should be expressive and environmentally responsible, achieving a balance between beauty and function. He's quick to note that "Architecture is so much more than creating great buildings. A really good architect has to know how to balance design and creativity with understanding and communicating with people." To that end, he devotes significant time as a valuable mentor, active in the AIA and teaching architecture courses at Montana State University, Arizona State University and the University of Arizona.
