Joyce Durham

"I come to work ready to challenge the status quo and deliver efficient and elegant healthcare design solutions that improve patient care."

When it comes to understanding patient care, Joyce brings a particularly relevant perspective to SmithGroupJJR’s healthcare practice: Her first career was as a registered nurse. As fate would have it, Joyce was selected for a planning team tasked with transitioning her unit to a new hospital. “I became acutely aware of the impact the physical environment has on the delivery of care,” she recalls. “It began my journey of integrating the clinical perspective into healthcare design.” She returned to Ann Arbor to earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree in architecture, and has since worked on planning medical facilities from Michigan to Myanmar.

Joyce is also drawn to “the work of makers who transform old materials into contemporary items,” and dreams of renovating an old church into a home. If she could free up a week in her schedule, Joyce says she’d be off to Paris or Montreal, “to speak French, eat French food, and walk around looking at old, elegant buildings.”
