As architects and engineers, we have an opportunity to design recreation facilities that promote awareness about sustainability through a holistic approach. To this end, SmithGroupJJR held a one-day charrette with recreation professionals and students to outline key design goals and features of the sustainable recreation center of the future.
The group focused discussions around the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Associations (NIRSA)
comprehensive view of sustainability encompassing social, environmental and economic values to understand how these factors impact the design of a recreation center. Through discussions, diagramming and sketching, participants ultimately identified the attributes of this ideal sustainable building. At the end of the session, designers worked to produce 3-dimenstional design outcomes for the sustainable recreation center of the future.
